The NEW Masterplanning team has been involved in the Heart of Slough since 2004. Our masterplan for this key town centre site formed the basis of a planning application in May 2008 and our remit included the Design & Access Statement, ES plans, mixed-use hotel, residential and retail scheme for the EP owned site and detailed design for the wider public realm.

Our original instruction from English Partnerships was to review developer proposals which were considered unacceptable in design terms and were unviable. Our review illustrated alternative, and more cost-effective design proposals which minimised infrastructure costs, improved access for buses, cyclists and pedestrians and promoted a mix of uses at ground level.

The revised scheme was accepted by EP and we have subsequently been retained to work alongside Slough Borough Council, Development Securities and Berkeley Homes to prepare the masterplan, development brief and detailed streetscape improvements for the A4.

The fundamental objective of the scheme is to expand the town centre, address the 'severance' created by the nature of the A4, and replace the roundabout and subways with a new street design which enhances the arrival in Slough and creates a new, mixed-use, 'heart' for the town.

450,000sqft of offices, 1450 new homes, a new bus station, library, retail, leisure and community facilities together with new space for Thames Valley University will create a gateway to Slough and a destination to complement the town centre. 'At grade' pedestrian crossings will connect the existing High Street to the new bus station, rail station, offices and University buildings and our role includes detailed design of the public realm and 'humanising' the streetscape along the A4.
