The University of York is one of the top ten in the country. The new campus was essential to allow for continued growth in student numbers, the introduction of new courses, new academic and leisure facilities and the expansion of the University Science Park.

The original (Heslington West) campus was developed within a formal masterplan which reflected the 1960s masterplanning principles which underpinned the original campus as well as 21st Century design and education requirements.

The new campus provides for substantial growth in student numbers and in academic, business and cultural facilities over the next 10-15 years. A clear landscape framework, transport strategy and set of core design principles will guide this growth.

The masterplan was supported by a development brief, prepared in partnership with the City Council officers and adopted by the Council. A community forum was established with local residents and other stakeholders and regular design sessions were held. Although the application was called in due to its Green Belt location, and evidence presented at the Inquiry, there was considerable support for the proposals and permission was granted in 2007.
