The key challenge was to deliver growth appropriate to Taunton's 'Principal Urban Area' status, without undermining the 'market town' qualities which made it an attractive place to live and work. The Urban Design Framework identified 50hectares of brownfield land in the town centre, much of it along the River Tone, atogether with the potential for a sustainable urban extension. The strategy created opportunities for significant employment, retail, leisure, cultural and residential development in a mixed-use town centre environment.
