The Stroud Concordat commissioned NEW Masterplanning and Hamilton-Baillie Associates to prepare a public realm strategy for Stroud town centre.

The appearence of Stroud town centre has been identified as undermining the existing qualities and future potential of the town. Concerns relate to the management of traffic, the condition of surfaces and street furniture and the general attractiveness of the town centre as a destination.

The public realm strategy seeks to build on the existing strengths and encourage more people to spend their time and money in the town. The historic centre is promoted as the a priority area for Stroud's future, recognising the distinctive qualities and ability of this location to offer something different.

The strategy seeks to enhance key attractions such as the lanes and alleyways, the markets, independent retailers and the high quality buildings of the historic centre.

A co-ordinated approach to access and parking is introduced seeking to achieve a better balance between pedestrains and traffic in the historic centre.

It also sets out recommendations to establish a pallette of suitable materials to help improve the appearence of streets and spaces and support their role and function in the town.

The strategy illustrates how the key principles could be implemented helping to inform and inspire the detailed design stage for the streets and spaces of the town centre.

The final report is currently subject to a formal consultation period (ending early December 2008) prior to adoption as Supplementary Planning Advice.
