Andover - Site preparation underway
The former Poundstretcher unit at the Chantry Centre has been demolished to make way for a new expanded theatre in the heart of Andover. Relocation of the theatre from its current location at Andover College was a key part of the Andover Town Centre masterplan completed by NEW masterplanning and Hemingway Design. The plans which received £18.3m of the Government's Levelling Up Fund will deliver an expanded cultural offer in the town centre including a multi-level auditorium, a separate performance space, studios, meeting rooms and cafes/ bars.
The masterplan proposals sought to relocate the theatre from its current location on the campus of Andover College where it lacked ‘road frontage’ and felt isolated to a more prominent town centre location. The proposals, which were strongly supported by the public, would allow the theatre to have a stronger relationship with existing bars and restaurants in Andover town centre to help support and strengthen the evening economy. The relocation would also enable Andover College the opportunity to review its campus to meet the future needs of its students.
